SARAJEVO, October 10 (FENA) - A photo-documentary exhibition about mental health titled 'Man is Man' has been set up in the exhibition space of Europe House in Sarajevo. The exhibition is curated by Armin Smailović and showcases snippets from the lives of people with mental disorders, conveying the message that recovery is possible with adequate support.
Launched on World Mental Health Day, this exhibition is organized by the Institute for Population and Development in partnership with the FBiH Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republika Srpska, with the Swiss Embassy in BiH as a patron.
Dženita Hrelja Hasečić from the Institute for Population and Development stated that through the exhibition 'Man is Man,' they aimed to draw attention to individuals with mental health issues in a different way.
"The photographs depict snippets of their lives. The photographer spent over a month engaging and conversing with them in the communities where they live. From this, the photographs emerged, telling their stories. This story is important as a message of hope. These are individuals who have recovered after long-term treatment and multiple hospitalizations," she said to journalists.
Enisa Mešić, a psychologist and psychotherapist leading the Healthy Community Project at the Institute for Population and Development, stated that the primary purpose of the exhibition is to combat the stigma surrounding individuals with mental health problems.
An integral part of today’s event at Europe House includes screenings of three films by author Irfan Avdić. These films feature the life stories of users, which are diverse and very inspiring.
For 14 years, the Institute for Population and Development has marked World Mental Health Day by supporting the strengthening of mental health protection systems. In addition to the exhibition 'Man is Man,' activities are taking place across cities in BiH, initiated by associations of mental health users.
The photo-documentary exhibition 'Man is Man' will be on display until October 18 at the exhibition space of Europe House in Sarajevo.
