SARAJEVO, April 28 (FENA) - The contract signing ceremony between the Center for the Promotion of Civil Society (CPCD) and 16 civil society organizations, media and creative groups selected through a public call for grants of the "SMART Balkans" project was held today in Sarajevo.

It is a three-year regional project that is implemented with the aim of strengthening participatory democracies and Euro-Atlantic integration in the countries of the Western Balkans, through the strengthening of civil society organizations and networks, for a stronger and more active role in creating a better future and sustainable development of peaceful and inclusive societies.

Aida Daguda, director of CPCD, which implements the project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that it is an important project because it will contribute to better stability and security in the region, especially considering the challenges faced by civil society organizations, but also the whole society.

"We need a higher level of solidarity and cooperation of citizens, institutions and civil society organizations in order to move forward," said Daguda.

Norwegian Ambassador to BiH Olav Reinartsen pointed out that civil society will be important for BiH if it really wants Euro-Atlantic integration, which is why his country finances and supports the project.

He emphasized that any attack on civil society is completely unacceptable and that he hopes that the grants awarded today will enable the work of civil society organizations that will help BiH become part of the structures to which it belongs.

During the implementation period of the project, 450 grants distributed in seven types of support for different aspects of activities will be awarded, in the total amount of 14.5 million euros.

The project is implemented by CPCD, together with partner organizations from Albania - Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) and North Macedonia - Center for Research and Policy Making (CRPM).
