STRASBOURG, March 14 (FENA) - The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, assessed that now is the key moment to reach an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo and resolve mutual issues, as this is very important for the enlargement process, but also for achieving European stability, von der Leyen told FENA in an interview hosted by the European Newsroom (ENR), stressing that the war in Ukraine highlighted the strategic importance of the European Union enlargement.
"You know that we want to bring our partner countries from the Western Balkans as close and as quickly as possible to the European Union," Von der Leyen added.
When it comes to the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, von der Leyen says that there a European Union plan for the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina "is on the table", which is why she believes that now is the moment to understand the importance of reaching an agreement for both sides.
"The normalization of those relations is the most important and crucial for the security, stability and prosperity of the entire region. I, therefore, hope that on the eve of the new talks, both sides will be very constructive," said the President of the European Commission.
When asked if there would be consequences if an agreement is not reached, Von der Leyen said that it is necessary to first try to find a solution, and then look at the results.
The European Commission president also spoke about the topics of the upcoming meetings of the Commission planned for this week.
Namely, the European Commission should announce today the proposals of two pieces of legislation - one on the industry with zero net emissions of greenhouse gases, and the other on key raw materials, which the EU needs in order to reach the goal of zero net emissions by 2050.
As planned by the schedule of the Commission's sessions on Thursday at the meeting in Brussels, the Commission will publish a proposal for the reform of the electricity market and a long-term strategy for the competitiveness of the economy.
The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that it is a package that focuses on the introduction of clean technology in order to achieve the goals for reducing harmful gas emissions, reaching the goals of the climate change agreement and overall reduction of the harmful impact on the environment through raising energy efficiency.
"This is a rapidly growing market and it is expected to experience a triple growth in value by 2030, and it is in our focus to pass laws in that direction, and the other is to achieve our unique competitiveness," she clarified.
The set of measures that will be presented, Von der Leyen claims, will show that it is possible to reduce emissions and have strategies because there is a global need for green energy, and the European Union wants to remain a leader in that area.
