MOSTAR, February 20 (FENA) – After completing their graduate studies, more and more students in Bosnia and Herzegovina continue their education in post-graduate or doctoral studies. Many decide to continue their education abroad and return to their country with the necessary knowledge and competencies. The possibilities are diverse.

Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) professor Enita Nakaš told FENA that the strategy of the University of Sarajevo, in the domain of internationalization, is based on the principles of "brain gain", which is why they are dedicated to short-term exchange programs.

“UNSA has over 200 IIAs with partners from the EU, and calls are published twice a year. Students of the third cycle can apply for the invitation. In addition, students of the third cycle of studies can apply for summer schools for doctoral students, for practice and research, depending on the signed contract with another partner university,” Vice-Rector Nakaš added.

In addition to the mentioned possibilities, professor Nakaš points out that the University of Sarajevo also conducts cotutelle doctorates, which means that the doctoral thesis is done at two universities at least, and upon completion, the doctoral student receives a diploma from both universities based on one doctoral thesis.

Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the University of Mostar (SUM) professor Sanja Bijakšić said that international cooperation activities are one of the strategic goals of the University of Mostar.

“They are implemented through the ERASMUS+ program, cross-border and regional cooperation, as well as cooperation with international organizations in the field of higher education and the services of embassies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. SUM is made up of 10 faculties and the Academy of Fine Arts, and in all of them, except for the Faculty of Pharmacy, classes are held in all three cycles,” Vice-Rector Bijakšić explained, adding that SUM has 530 Ph.D. students, of which 83 percent are domestic and 17 percent foreign.

Vice-Rector Bijakšić notes that the University has cooperation with higher education institutions from over 35 countries, signed more than 115 international university agreements, over 60 KA171 and more than 75 university partners.

The University of Mostar participates in the implementation of two joint doctoral studies conducted in Austria - one in economic sciences and the other in educational and communication sciences. All students from Europe who have completed graduate university studies (master's degree) can enroll in these studies, and it brings them great benefits and values.

It is a doctoral study at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences in Eisenstadt, where doctoral students are awarded a joint diploma upon completion of their studies, which is verified by six universities for one program and four universities for the other. Joint doctoral studies are promoted by the whole of Europe, especially the European Union.

She clarifies that the culture of merging means studying abroad, studying in English, studying part-time according to the standards of a modern era, issuing joint diplomas and joint supplementary documents on the study of all partner universities, the joint academic title Ph.D., which is officially recognized in the countries of all partner institutions and throughout Europe.

Vice-Rector for International and Inter-University Cooperation of the University of Banja Luka (UNIBL) professor Milica Balaban told FENA that 15 study programs of the third cycle of studies (doctoral studies) are currently being taught at that university, and from the next academic year, it is planned to start the third cycle of studies at the Chemistry Study Program at the Faculty of Science.

Since the establishment of UNIBL in 1975 until today, a total of 886 candidates have defended their doctoral theses.

Vice-Rector for International Cooperation SUM professor Sanja Bijakšić said that scholarships are available to doctoral students, which are published by the embassies of European and international countries, as well as the competent ministries.
