SARAJEVO, December 11 (FENA) - Director of the Directorate for European Integration (DEI) Edin Dilberović believes that obtaining the candidate status for EU membership would certainly be a great incentive for the entire BiH society, because it would be a message that the goals are achievable and that results are rewarded.

In a statement for FENA, Dilberović said that candidate status is a procedural step that every country that wants to join the European family must take.

“For some countries it was the first, and for us in BiH it is a step that requires a lot of work in terms of adapting the legal, political and economic system to the rules that apply in the European Union,” said Dilberović.

According to him, 14 key priorities have been the focus of the work of the institutions in BiH since the publication of the Opinion of the European Commission, and they will remain after obtaining candidate status.

He says that a certain number of tasks related to these priorities have been implemented or are in the process of being implemented, but some of the key laws still need to be adopted. These are, for example, the law on the HJPC, the law on the courts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the law on preventing conflicts of interest, etc.

Obtaining candidate status would certainly be a great incentive for the entire BiH society, because it would be a message that goals are achievable and that results are rewarded.

“That is why the authorities and institutions should use the remaining time until the meetings of the EU institutions to give concrete results and as many arguments as possible to the EU member states for an unanimous decision in favor of BiH and its citizens,” concluded Dilberović.

European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Olivér Várhelyi said in November that Bosnia and Herzegovina could receive candidate status for EU membership in the next month.

Várhelyi visited Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of November, and on that occasion he stated that they sent a proposal to the member states, the European Council, to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status.

He added that they want to see tangible, clear results that they can report to the European Council before the session in December.
