SARAJEVO, January 30 (FENA) - Pope Francis accepted the renunciation of the pastoral management of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese of Cardinal Vinko Puljić and has retired him as of this Saturday.
He will be succeeded at the head of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese by the current Archbishop Coadjutor Msgr. Tomo Vukšić.
In the premises of the Archbishop's Residence in the capital of BiH in the presence of two archbishops, members of the consultants and the seat of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese and several associates of Cardinal Puljić and Msgr. Vukšić, this news was announced by the charge d'affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in Sarajevo, Msgr. Amaury Medina Blanco, announced the Vrhbosna Archdiocese.
Cardinal Puljić was at the head of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese for 31 years. He was appointed Archbishop of Vrhbosna by John Paul II on December 7, 1990. The same pope ordained him as bishop on January 6, 1991. He was enthroned in the Sarajevo Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on January 19, 1991.
The first year of his episcopal service was marked by the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He remained in besieged Sarajevo during the conflict, although he occasionally left the city as needed. For a time, he was the only religious leader present in the BiH capital.
Due to persistent efforts to end the conflict, mutual reconciliation, Pope John Paul II called for dialogue. on October 30, 1994, he was appointed cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. He thus became the first cardinal in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He participated in the conclaves of 2005 and 2013, in which Benedict XVI and Francis were elected as popes.
In accordance with the Code of Canon Law, when he turned 75 on September 8, 2020, he offered Pope Francis his resignation, and on October 29, 2020, the Holy Father replied that he would remain in the position of Archbishop of Vrhbosna "until he decides otherwise".
