Exhibition 'Guarding Lions' by Austrian-French photographer Elodie Grethen

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 11 (FENA) - The Austrian Cultural Forum Sarajevo announced an exhibition 'Guarding Lions' by Austrian-French photographer Elodie Grethen to be open on Tuesday, in the MAK Gallery at the Museum of Literature and Theater Arts of BiH in Sarajevo.

The exhibition follows women and men from different backgrounds, depicting their struggle for feminist and queer equality in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Grethen offers a contemporary portrayal of activists, artists and people whose sexual orientation or gender identity calls into question the traditional patterns of gender divisions in post-war society.

“Focusing on Sarajevo, this series creates a fantasy portrait of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and lays claim to the equal and universal right to the city (Henri Lefebvre). The photographs offer a safe space - an idealized and imaginary haven, yet to find its translation in public space and reality, where gender-defined territories continue to reinforce patriarchal patterns,” it is stated.

Elodie Grethen is a French artist and photographer. She lives and works between Austria and France. She studied photography at the Friedl Kubelka School of Artistic Photography in Vienna, where she graduated in 2018. She has won several awards and scholarships, and since 2015 she has been actively exhibiting in Austria and around the world.

As it was announced from the Museum of Literary Theater of BiH, the exhibition was also supported by the Sarajevo Open Center, and it was organized for the Coming Out Day, which is celebrated every year on October 11.

“The opening of the exhibition is on October 12 at 7 pm in the MAK Gallery at the Museum of Literature and Theater Arts of BiH. The exhibition will be open to the public until October 22,” it was announced.
