SARAJEVO, October 5 (FENA) - Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić will participate on Wednesday, October 6, in the summit of the European Union and the Western Balkans, which will be held in Brdo near Kranj in Slovenia.

In a statement for FENA, Komšić expressed the expectation that through the initiative of the Common Regional Market, which is an integral part of the Berlin Process, the participants will discuss an economic package worth 30 billion euros, which should cover the period from 2021 to 2027.

He noted that the development of mutual cooperation is necessary for the socio-economic recovery of the region, especially for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which by accepting the package has an excellent opportunity to mitigate all the damages its economy has suffered during the pandemic and more.

"When it comes to the political part of the summit, my expectations were already expressed during the meeting with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Sarajevo, when I requested that the word "enlargement" be retained in the Declaration to be adopted at the summit," Komšić reminded.

He expressed confidence that this would happen because removing that word from the Declaration could be very bad and would mean that the region loses perspective, and citizens would be disappointed in the whole process as it is already difficult to maintain Euro-optimism in the region.

He believes that this summit is an opportunity for the European Union to once again clearly stand behind the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, i.e. behind all five judgments, in order to remove all elements of discrimination against citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina, its constitutional system and electoral system.

He emphasizes that this is especially important given the fact that there are political forces in BiH, such as the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) and the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ), which he says oppose the implementation of these judgments, "advocating for even greater ethnic divisions in both society and the state".

"The European Union must not give up its system of values, democracy and equality of citizens, because that would mean defeat for both the EU and BiH. The true values of Bosnia and Herzegovina are the true values on which the European Union resides," Komšić concluded in a statement for FENA.

Tomorrow, the European Union-Western Balkans summit will bring together the leaders of the EU member states and partners from the Western Balkans in Brdo near Kranj in Slovenia.

The meeting will be chaired by European Council President Charles Michel, who will represent the EU, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
