OSLO / SARAJEVO, November 27 (FENA) - The fourth "Mine Free World" review conference is being held in Oslo from November 25 to 29, marking the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and Their Destruction (Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention).
The Oslo Review Conference is a formal diplomatic meeting of the 164 States Parties of the said Convention, which represents an opportunity for all the member states to meet once again to discuss the results achieved after the 2014 Maputo conference and to give direction for the implementation of the Convention in the next five years.
In parallel with the conference, there will be a series of side events aimed at establishing a dialogue on the current status of the Convention, as well as the needs and challenges to fulfill the obligations arising from it.
BiH Ambassador to Norway Nedim Makarević and Director of the BiH Mine Action Center Saša Obradović attend the conference as members of the BiH delegation who will also address at the meeting as part of the planned statements by States Parties on the current status and remaining obligations, as well as on the efforts and needs for their implementation.
As before, Bosnia and Herzegovina's strong commitment to continue its further efforts to address the threats caused by landmines and explosive remnants of war will be underlined. This is supported by the adoption of a new strategic document for the period 2018-2025, which confirms the final intention to resolve this long-term issue in the most efficient and effective manner possible, by achieving visible results, within the required timeframe.
Ongoing mine risk education and activities have reduced the number of civilian casualties as people are more informed and educated about mine and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) hazards and how to avoid potential risk.
"In the past, BiH has received various types of assistance and cooperation from large donor communities, representing a major and important impetus for the realization of our strategic and operational goals. Although we are struggling to invest more in the process, we must emphasize the importance of donor assistance and contributions in the coming period, in order to reach a land without mines and other explosive remnants of war," it is said in a statement from the BiH Mine Action Center.
