Izetbegović: Broader consensus needed for amendments to the Election Law

SARAJEVO, January 24 (FENA) - The BiH Presidency Member Bakir Izetbegović stressed today at a meeting with the Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Bruce Berton that it is necessary to preserve the balance between civic and ethnic rights in all solutions regarding the process of amending the Election Law of BiH.  

He especially emphasized that the broadest consensus of all parliamentary political parties and the active participation of the Office of the High Representative must be ensured for the amendments to the Election Law.

Izetbegović and Berton also discussed the activities of the OSCE Mission and exchanged views on the current political situation in BiH and the region.

Izetbegović thanked Berton for the support that the OSCE has provided with the goal of achieving full constitutional equality of the Bosnian language in the entity of Republika Srpska.

He noted that also, in some of the cantons in FBiH Bosniaks are being denied the right to use the Bosnian language as one of the officials languages in BiH in their educational and cantonal institutions.

Berton announced an upcoming visit by OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger to BiH, and spoke about OSCE activities related to judicial reform, strengthening the rule of law, media freedom and education.
