BRUSSELS, December 1 (FENA) – Bosnia and Herzegovina remains a focus for NATO, and political leaders in the country must move away from divisive rhetoric and focus on reforms in the interest of all citizens, NATO officials said today at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels, ahead of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers scheduled for 3 December.
At today's briefing on NATO's engagement in the Western Balkan countries, NATO officials emphasized that the Alliance has devoted significant attention to Bosnia and Herzegovina over the past several years, especially this year, and that it has increased its political and practical presence and activities in the country.
It was also stressed that NATO is closely monitoring developments in BiH and that, following key events this year and the completion of elections in Republika Srpska, it is crucial for political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to step away from divisive rhetoric, overcome obstacles, and lead the country on a path of reforms.
In their remarks on BiH, NATO officials welcomed its progress on the European path, as well as the recent renewal of the EUFOR Althea mission mandate.
They added that NATO has been engaged in the Western Balkans for several decades, and officials reiterated that the Alliance’s commitment remains firm and unwavering.
''NATO's position is clear: our commitment to the stability and security of the Western Balkans is solid, and we will not allow a security vacuum,'' they stated.
They emphasized that NATO is taking all necessary political and operational measures to ensure the protection of peace in the region.
Regarding the KFOR operation in Kosovo, officials said it is crucial for local stability, while in BiH, NATO continues to support the EU-led Althea mission through the 'Berlin Plus' arrangements.
According to NATO officials, the Alliance has broad partnership cooperation with BiH, including the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo and support through numerous programs.
They added that NATO continues to work closely with international partners, especially the European Union.
''We do all this because the security of the Western Balkans is of vital importance to all of us, and we will not allow peace and stability to be threatened,'' officials said, stressing that regional leaders must also contribute, take responsibility for their countries, and lead them on the path of reforms.
