SARAJEVO, May 2 (FENA) – The battle in which Sarajevo was defended on May 2, 1992, known as the Battle for the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was crucial not only for the defense of the capital but also for preserving the independence and territorial integrity of the country. It was the first major battle for the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the aggressor's plan—carried out by the forces of the former Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) supported by paramilitary formations—was to capture the Presidency building and eliminate the state leadership.
