Borrell: The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina do not deserve isolation, blockades and regression

BRUSSELS, July 20 (FENA) - The High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) Josep Borrell said, after yesterday's meeting of the Council of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), which was chaired by Borjana Krišto, the chairperson of the Council of Ministers of BiH, together with Borrell, that he condemned irresponsible and secessionist statements, stressing that everyone understands who it refers to.

"Of course, we have the possibility to react in case the situation worsens. We have some tools at our disposal, but we will not use them unless absolutely necessary. My role is to encourage leaders to resolve the situation through dialogue. I welcome the dialogue and every proposal that comes from those who show goodwill and want to contribute to turning the country towards a constructive plan that is in line with the European perspective," he said.

He says that there are "really serious challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina", referring to the announcements of the entity of Republika Srpska about, as Borrell says, things that are against the European perspective and that go in the direction of isolating Bosnia and Herzegovina from Europe because it is about undermining the constitutional order.

"Such an act must be something that will be stopped because if something like that continues, it could have serious consequences. Such rhetoric of threats of secession and disintegration, threats to territorial integrity, glorification of war criminals, all that must stop because there is no place for such behavior in Europe," he says.

He believes that the people of BiH deserve progress towards the European path, that they do not deserve crises, isolation, blocking of the government and regression, but the exact opposite. He emphasized that during the meeting, they encouraged all political actors to engage in positive dialogue in order to resolve internal political issues.

He said that they had an intensive meeting, noting that BiH managed to get out of the political blockade and into the phase of creating political opportunities. He especially pointed out that the country came from a stalemate to new opportunities because in December it also received the status of a candidate country.

He praised the efforts of the Council of Ministers under the leadership of Borjana Krišto because, as he adds, a constructive dialogue was held regarding the acceleration of European reforms and because certain progress was achieved at the national level.

"We also appreciate the harmonization of security and foreign policy with the European Union. You are now at 94 percent, which is almost complete compliance. However, compliance is not just statements, it is not just expressions of wishes. Compliance also means effective implementation and we must see that implementation. In the meantime, I should also thank BiH, which contributed to our joint security and defense policy missions abroad," he emphasized.

As he reminded, there are also 14 key priorities that must be met in order to open accession negotiations. Also, the recommendations from the Conclusions adopted on June 12 must be fulfilled in order to ensure a functional Bosnia and Herzegovina.
