MOSTAR, June 25 (FENA) - In the past period, the City of Mostar signed a number of documents and joined numerous initiatives related to the energy transition and the fight against climate change.

Among other things, the Mostar City Council recently adopted the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) for the period up to 2030.

Mostar thus joined a global initiative that has been joined by more than 15,000 cities and municipalities around the world.

Energy manager and coordinator of the City of Mostar, Darko Knezović, said in an interview with FENA, that a number of measures are planned under SECAP, such as the construction of solar plants on the roofs of public buildings, the procurement of electric buses for public city transport and the modernization of public lighting.

He reminded that the City of Mostar has already initiated the procedure of obtaining the necessary permits for the construction of the first solar plant that will be owned by the City.

It is also planned to install solar power plants for self-consumption on the buildings of public facilities, where it is technically feasible.

Knezović pointed out that the ultimate goal is to enable citizens to be not only consumers but also producers of electricity.

"According to the current laws, in order to build any energy plant on your property, you must have a building permit and you must register as an electricity producer, regardless of the power. The new law will significantly simplify this procedure and will enable private individuals to produce electricity for their own needs, and they will be able to place the surplus in the grid," said Knezović.

The city also plans to modernize public transport, which includes the purchase of electric buses, as well as the digitization of bus stops.

"New bus stops with digital displays have already been purchased, which will show when the bus arrives, where it is going, and all of this should increase the use of public transport, reduce the use of private vehicles and thus lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions," said Knezović.

The first steps in the modernization of public lighting were made four or five years ago, and these days, 1,200 new LED lighting fixtures are being installed in certain parts of the city. It is a joint project implemented by the City of Mostar in cooperation with UNDP, and its value is around 700,000 KM.
