SARAJEVO, June 20 (FENA) - The United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Institution of Ombudsman for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered experts in the field of human rights, representatives of the executive and legislative authorities, civil society organizations and the international community at a conference in the context of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Paris Principles.
The ombudsperson for human rights in BiH, Jasminka Džumhur, emphasized on this occasion that today's meeting is an instrument for looking at the state of human rights from the perspective of different entities and a starting point for creating action plans to improve the situation.
"The analytical report for BiH indicated that comprehensive political frameworks for the promotion and application of human rights must be developed, including nationwide strategies for human rights, non-discrimination and protection of minorities," she told journalists before the start of the conference.
She believes that the conference will result in sufficient instructions based on which the decision-makers will recommend the direction in which to create their strategies.
The most critical situation is in the field of civil and political rights and social and economic rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina according to the data from the Annual Report of the Institution of the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is the question of free expression, that is, freedom of access to information, access to justice from the aspect of the length of the execution of court judgments, the actions of the prosecution, the police, inspection bodies in the field of economic and social rights, issues from the domain of social protection, access to health care, which includes the right to medicines and others forms of health care and education.
Senior Human Rights Adviser at the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in BiH, Agnes Picod, said that the renewal of the spirit of the Declaration is of essential importance in today's time when it is evident that there is a decline in human rights around the world.
"We are faced with many challenges. Currently, these are environmental protection, we have conflicts, crises, and challenges related to technological progress," she stressed.
Dejan Lučka from the Center for Human Rights from Banja Luka reminded of Eleanor Roosevelt, who for a year, together with her team, dedicatedly worked for the world to obtain a declaration that would equally protect all citizens of the world.
