SARAJEVO, June 12 (FENA) - Head of the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Johann Sattler, said today that all levels of government play a very important role in the realization of the 14 key priorities listed in the Opinion of the European Commission on BiH's application for EU membership.
He met today with representatives of the executive and legislative authorities of the Sarajevo Canton, with whom he discussed the EU accession process, the strategic development of legislation and policy, as well as EU programming and financing.
Sattler pointed out that the granting of candidate status in December 2022 was an important milestone for Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also an incentive for the newly elected leaders to implement the reforms necessary for EU accession with new momentum.
He added that the EU Delegation is currently conducting political dialogue with all levels of government, from state to local.
"In addition to cooperation, there are also certain obligations, such as the improvement of basic human rights, freedom of assembly and freedom of speech," he said.
He praised the formation of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Sarajevo Canton and expressed hope that such an office would be formed at the FBiH level as well, which was confirmed by FBiH Prime Minister Nermin Nikšić.
He emphasized that the EU not only acts declaratively but also acts concretely, which is accompanied by financial resources.
Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk said that they discussed current projects they are working on in cooperation with the EU, among which is the relocation of the prison from the center of Sarajevo to Blažuj, which will be completed by the end of the year, then the expansion of the capacity of the Municipal and Cantonal Court in Sarajevo.
Speaker of the SC Assembly, Elvedin Okerić, pointed out that Sarajevo Canton has been an example for several years, showing that it is possible to change processes and that they have offered this model to higher levels of government.
One such example, he added, is the establishment of an anti-corruption system within the canton, the improvement of the security system and the increase of the rule of law.
