GORAŽDE, April 30 (FENA) - A memorial to six British soldiers from UNPROFOR, who died during the mission in the former UN Protected Area of Goražde, was unveiled on Saturday at Jabuka site near Goražde.
Fergus Rennie, Phillip Armstrong, Martin Dowdell, Chris Turner, Ben Hinton and Sean Taylor were killed during the operation codenamed "Grapple" in 1994.
The construction of the monument in their honor was financed by the Goražde Children Foundation, which was founded by former British soldiers who served in the military mission in Goražde.
"This is a special day for us, but I don't see it as the end of the campaign but as the next step, it is especially important for us that we managed to gather all the British troops in order to make this educational for the children and their future so that because of this, today, we are even more dedicated to providing support to the children of Goražde. So it's a special day, but not in the sense of "we're done" but "we can do a lot more", said the founder of the Goražde Children's Foundation, Maurice Evlyn Bufton.
Ian Harris, who was the commander of the second British unit that arrived in Goražde in September 1994, to support the activities of UNPROFOR, is also a member of the Foundation.
"As a unit commander, I lost four soldiers here, whose names are on the monument, and almost 30 years later, this brings up special emotions in me, because I was directly involved in those incidents in which we lost four young soldiers in the surrounding hills, who as part of the international forces, were protecting Goražde," said Harris.
He noted that this place and the memorial will continue to be an important place for his colleagues as well.
