SARAJEVO, March 31 (FENA) - The Agency for Gender Equality of Bosnia and Herzegovina of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of March 31, the International Day of Visibility of Transgender Persons, draws the public's attention to the need to improve the realization of the civil rights of persons living with a different gender identity (transgender persons).

"We would like to remind that transgender persons in BiH are not allowed to legally change their gender, given that the gender designation in personal documents and the unique identity number can only be changed after a "complete" medical gender reassignment surgery. In this way, a discriminatory practice is carried out against people who live in a different gender identity, which is contrary to Article 2 of the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity, it is said in a statement from the BiH Agency for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Human Rights and refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

They remind that last July the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Action Plan for the improvement of human rights and basic freedoms of LGBTI persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"The action plan is the product of the work of an expert working group of representatives of competent state and entity ministries and the non-governmental sector. The plan, among other things, envisages a measure of analysis of the medical and administrative aspects of gender reassignment modalities for BiH citizens.

We call on the institutions in whose legal jurisdiction the registry books are to urgently regulate and simplify the legal gender change procedure for transgender persons, and we appeal to the public of Bosnia and Herzegovina to accept the existence of transgender persons in our society and help their full social inclusion and equality, it is stated in the press release.
