SARAJEVO, March 29 (FENA) - A representative of UNICEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dr. Rownak Khan today called on BiH authorities to strengthen the social protection system so that it can effectively respond to emergency situations.
At the opening of the conference "The road to the improvement of social protection resistant to crises and emergency situations in BiH", Khan stated that in such situations children are denied basic rights such as the right to education and health care.
"The concept of social protection resistant to crises implies that the system does not only react when they happen but to be prepared in order to reduce their impact," pointed out Rownak.
She added that one of the important components of a system that is ready to be resistant to emergency situations is strengthened social protection, especially when it comes to children.
The FBiH Assistant Minister for Labor and Social Policy Miroslav Jurešić emphasized that in the coming period, the actions of social protection institutions will be raised to a higher level, in which the line ministry will actively participate.
Vladimir Makarić, Assistant Minister of Health and Social Protection of the RS, said that centers for social work have proven to be a very important link in the chain of rescue in emergency situations, but also in planning prevention and preparing for crises.
It was pointed out that the conference will result in a Road Map of social protection resistant to crises and emergency situations in BiH, which will pave the way for future investments and reforms in the integration of preparedness in social protection and its further positioning in a multi-sector model of disaster risk reduction.
The conference was organized within the program "Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina" worth 7.1 million KM, financed by the Government of Switzerland and the United Nations, and implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA and FAO.
