FTC BiH: Exporters will be faced with stricter measures in passenger and freight traffic

SARAJEVO, January 5 (FENA) - The Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH (FTC BiH) stated that long-term delays at border crossings are a common phenomenon encountered by carriers in the international transport of goods and that this is an issue that must be resolved through redefining the status of border crossings with the Republic of Croatia.

“Due to recent holidays, as every year at this time, activities in the field of cargo transportation are reduced, so in such a short period it is not realistic to expect any significant changes in the cross-border traffic of goods, regardless of the entry of the Republic of Croatia into the Schengen area from 1 January,” FTC BiH told FENA.

FTC BiH points out that our exporters will be faced with stricter measures, both in passenger and freight traffic, given the fact that BiH borders the Republic of Croatia. This will probably cause more congestion at border crossings.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia share 17 border crossings in the international road transport of goods, of which Gradiška and Bijača have special status as these are crossings that can be used for all types of goods and where all necessary bodies for inspection of goods of plant and animal origin exist. Thus, all types of goods can be imported into the EU at only two border crossings for international transport.

Crowds are especially related to the transport of perishable goods that require a phytosanitary inspection, and it is necessary to open additional crossings in the future to reduce waiting.

They also stated that if special treatment is not provided regarding the stay of professional drivers in the Schengen area, the already noticeable shortage of drivers could further increase. The drivers' stay in the Schengen zone will be increased, and the permitted stay is 90 days within 180 days.

“With the entry of Croatia into the Schengen area, the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina will not feel the consequences in terms of additional price increases or shortages of products imported from Croatia. The positive effect is reflected in the fact that with Croatia's entry into Schengen, controls on the Croatian-Slovenian border will cease, and thus the frequent delays that currently exist at these border crossings,” FTC BiH said.
