SARAJEVO, October 23 (FENA) - The FBiH Ministry of Health and the Donor Network in Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with partners from Turkey, gathered experts in Sarajevo at an international conference on organ donation and transplantation.

The conference is an initial activity within the Project of technical support to strengthen transplantation and organ donation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as marking the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation.

President of the Organ Transplantation Foundation in Turkey, Eyup Kahveci, told reporters before the conference that the project, aimed at technical support in developing awareness of the importance of organ donation, will include activities such as education of medical staff, as well as general education of the public.

“Technical support is needed to strengthen the organ donation and transplantation system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This also implies the development of a system in BiH regarding intensive care, staff education, especially transplant coordinators. We will also have new activities regarding the development of strategies for activists regarding the development of awareness of the importance of organ donation. We need strong cooperation in order to succeed in implementing that project,” he emphasized.

President of the Donor Network of BiH, Halima Resić, emphasizes that this project will be implemented in the next two years, and the education of doctors and nurses, as well as the promotion of organ donation, is planned.

According to her, it is necessary to educate health professionals, to visit hospitals and clinical centers, "because doubts regarding organ donation are among all of us".

“We have staff, but we must have better organization and better connection with the institutions of the system,” she said.

Assistant to the FBiH Minister of Health, Marina Bera, said that the transplant program has been the focus of the Ministry's work for several years. In this context, the ministry, in addition to legislation that is fully harmonized with European Union (EU) directives, participates in or independently implements other activities related to transplant medicine.

The international conference "Organ donation and transplantation" was organized by the FBiH Ministry of Health and the Donor Network in Bosnia and Herzegovina together with partners from the Republic of Turkey - the Turkish Transplant Foundation and the International Transplantation Network, Bezmialem Vakif University, University of Health Sctudies - Center for the Study of Health Sciences of the Balkans, the Faculty of Medicine of Gazi University, the Network and Alliance of Transplant Coordinators, the Association of Turkish Intensivists and the Health Diplomatic Society, with the financial support of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).
