Čović: The biggest step forward should have been made towards the reform of the Election Law

BRUSSELS, 12 June (FENA) - Today's meeting was organized with too many participants and in a format that was discouraging to me, as 15 political parties were invited, nine of them Bosniak, five Serb and we from the HNS (Croat People's Assembly). We assessed that it makes no sense to be a participant in these talks, to legitimize these two Bosniak members of the BiH Presidency at the end of the mandate, and to actually open a campaign for them for the next elections. That would be politically naive because the campaign has already started, the HDZ BiH and the HNS President Dragan Čović told FENA, who chose not to attend today's meeting of BiH parliamentary party leaders with European Council President Charles Michel in Brussels.

He added that the HDZ was involved in the first part of the technical preparation of today's meeting, which took place at the level of advisors, in the desire to make the document or statement as fair as possible.

"Even before leaving for Brussels, I said that there is no possibility to put signatures on the document where the Bosniak members of the Presidency of BiH would be signing it as well, who have usurped the right of the Croat people in the elections on several occasions. One discussion was held, an attempt was made to put that document in the function of the stability of BiH, our future candidate status and what should be done as a priority," Čović explains.

He thanked European Council President Charles Michel for his effort, although he reiterated that the format of the meeting was not the right one. He also thanked Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, saying that he was the one that had launched an initiative to hold a meeting in Brussels in the first place.

"I regret that it all ended like this. I will send a letter to Mr. Michel, because I was here in Brussels waiting to perhaps see a different format of conversation. There was a lot of secrecy around this meeting and in the end, it was, unfortunately, a format that limited the possibilities, at least of my participation.

This document that has been prepared is of general nature and I do not know whether anyone will sign it and whether this is expected to happen at all. It was set up as if there would be a signing, even though I was told it would not. I came here to show good intent and out of respect for Mr. Michel. We believe that the biggest step should have been made towards the reform of the election law, but that was not possible in this format," concluded Čović.
