SARAJEVO, March 6 (FENA) - When the first refugees from BiH started going to Europe and other continents after our country was hit by war destruction in 1992, it was inconceivable that only three decades later convoys of refugees would arrive in Europe. Footages from Ukraine, attacks by the Russian army, suffering of civilians, shelling, humanitarian corridors, all of it reminds us of the siege of Sarajevo, destruction and suffering in BiH, said the president of the Union for Sustainable Return and Integration of BiH Mirhunisa Zukić speaking for FENA.
Comparing the situation from the aspect of civilians and human tragedies brought by military attacks and aggression now in Ukraine, and 30 years ago in BiH, Zukić says that especially emotional reactions of sympathy of BiH citizens with Ukrainians are understandable because they know what shelling, going to shelters, and being a refugee really means.
Unfortunately, the suffering is repeated, this time we see the use of powerful weapons by a world power, and the whole of Europe is under threat.
"Because of everything that is happening in Ukraine and because of the political crisis in BiH and the instability of the Balkans, members of the Union for Sustainable Return are marking this year's jubilee, 30 years since the founding of the Alliance of Refugees and Displaced Persons of BiH while witnessing the exodus of more than a million refugees from Ukraine who fled their homes in just seven days.
Unfortunately, the values of civilization have been called into question again, they have been overrun, people's lives are again 'the cheapest commodity" says Zukić, noting that the darkest pages of history are opening up again.
