Representatives of the opposition parties in the BiH PA meet with Poirel

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 10 (FENA) - Representatives of the opposition parties in the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina talked today with the Director of the Council of Europe's Human Rights Directorate Christophe Poirel about the implementation of the verdict in the Sejdić and Finci v. BiH case and related judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.

In an open conversation, which was attended by MPs in the House of Representatives of the Parliament of BiH Saša Magazinović, Nenad Nešić, Jasmin Emrić, Mirko Šarović, Mirjana Markinković - Lepić and Aida Barucija, pointed out a number of issues and problems facing our country in connection with constitutional and electoral reform, and the implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights on which, as has been said, these reforms are essentially based.

Director of the Directorate for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Christoph Poirel emphasized that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, as the executive body of this institution, continuously monitors the process of execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights from the group of cases "Sejdić and Finci v. BiH". In this regard, he expressed concern that, as he said, after so much time, since 2009, when the European Court of Human Rights ruled on the appeal of Sejdić and Finci, no step forward has been made in the implementation of this judgment.

According to Poirel, the role of the opposition parties in these reform processes is of great importance, because, as he pointed out, decisions on amending the Constitution in the BiH PA require a two-thirds majority, which must include the votes of the opposition. He said that it was time for Bosnia and Herzegovina to start establishing a system in which there is no discrimination, and added that the Council of Europe Committee would continue to put pressure on the ruling parties and all relevant political actors in the country.

Representatives of opposition political parties represented in the PA BiH informed the Council of Europe official about the current political situation in the country and stressed that in the current environment of blockade of the state institutions there are no conditions for working on changes in electoral legislation.

They emphasized that the opposition parties are committed to the implementation of all judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, but warned that this would not happen without the political will of the ruling structures, which, as they pointed out, control all processes in the country.

In that context, they called on the Council of Europe and other international institutions to put additional pressure on the ruling political parties, in order for our country to continue its European path, and meet the conditions regarding democratization of society and respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms of all BiH citizens.
