NEW YORK, November 2 (FENA) - The United Nations Security Council is due to consider the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the extension of the EUFOR Mission to BiH on Wednesday (November 3), whose mandate expires on November 5, confirmed the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of BiH to the United Nations in New York Sven Alkalaj in a statement for FENA.
In the meantime, meetings and consultations are being held behind closed doors between representatives of UN Security Council member states, in which BiH does not participate as it is not a member of the Security Council.
The session was originally scheduled to take place today, but was postponed because, according to Alkalaj, the text of the resolution that was supposed to extend the mandate of EUFOR forces was not agreed and because of an agreement on how to hold a session on the situation in BiH
"As it is known, Russia and China do not recognize the legitimacy of the High Representative of the International Community in BiH Christian Schmidt, and from that point of view, all connotations that would be related to the High Representative are debatable for them,” Alkalaj explains.
Alkalaj emphasizes that the most important thing for him is to discuss the situation in BiH, since "we are witnessing saber-rattling and the disintegration of BiH is being announced", which is why it is extremely important for the UN Security Council to comment on this and take a stand.
"The position taken by the Security Council is binding on all members. I had the opportunity to see the report prepared by Schmidt for the Security Council and it reflects the real situation in BiH and faithfully outlines the situation,” says Alkalaj.
High Representative Christian Schmidt warned in the report that BiH was in imminent danger of disintegration and that there is a "very real" possibility of new conflicts.
The report, which Schmidt is due to submit to the United Nations Security Council, the first since he was appointed to the post on August 1, states that if Republika Srpska separatists carry out their threat to re-create their own army, more international peacekeepers should be sent to BiH to prevent new conflicts.
In his first report since taking office, Schmidt, a former minister in the German government, warned that BiH faces "the greatest existential threat in the post-war period" and as one example of this, he singled out the threat of BiH Presidency member and SNSD leader Milorad Dodik withdrawing from state institutions, including the BiH Armed Forces.
