SARAJEVO, October 26 (FENA) - The Association of Organizations for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities "Sumero" and the United States Agency for International Development USAID / INSPIRE signed a three-year Agreement on Cooperation in the field of deinstitutionalization of persons with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

USAID / INSPIRE Director Jasmin Bešić said that they have been working for a long time to improve human rights, with a special emphasis on people with disabilities who have been marginalized in many ways.

“The signing of this agreement is one of the ways of support of the US Government in improving human rights in BiH,” he said.

He emphasized that they have implemented various programs in that area in previous years because they believe that people with disabilities deserve a more humane and dignified way of life.

“The principle implemented by Sumero is accepted all over the world, and that is that people live in smaller living communities in which they have far greater, more dedicated and more adapted care in relation to institutions,” he said.

He added that this type of care is more financially favorable and affordable.

Bešić said that by signing the agreement, he would support the process of deinstitutionalization in BiH and expressed hope that together they would achieve significant results.

Haris Haverić, Director of the Association of Organizations for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities "Sumero", said that discrimination of persons with intellectual disabilities is very visible in that process.

Haverić said that he would try to initiate in many local communities in BiH that the process of deinstitutionalization finally comes to life.
