SARAJEVO, August 19 (FENA) - As part of the Competition Program - Documentary Film of the 27th Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF), the film "When We Were Them" directed by Danis Tanović and Damir Šagolj was screened last night at the Cineplexx cinema.
The documentary "When We Were Them" tells the story of thousands of migrants stuck in the northern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, surrounded by minefields and destruction from the country's war. Tents erected in forests or abandoned buildings cannot protect them from the harsh Bosnian winter. They find it difficult to get food, clothes, firewood, but nothing is as difficult as the daily violation of their basic human rights.
Tanović and Šagolj showed all the brutality and inhumanity of the lives of people "on the move" who are trying to reach the European Union in the hope that they will achieve a better life there.
“We went to that place for the first time two or three years ago, and after that we helped some people who were bringing humanitarian aid again. Then we decided to try to record something because the whole situation in Krajina is really terrible, where there are refugees and people who help them,” Tanović told FENA.
According to him, the whole situation is horrible, in which the Croatian police beat them, drove them twenty kilometers away from the border, stripped them naked and let them walk in the snow like that.
He also added that local laws prescribe that you must not give a ride to migrant to help him.
“We had a case of a woman who walked ten kilometers with a child in her arms and you must not take her in a car because there are police who can accuse you of human trafficking. Not everyone can help these people, but we should not make things worse for them,” Tanović pointed out.
He stated that there is an idea to make a longer film on this topic.
