SARAJEVO, March 14 (FENA) - The Association "Aarhus Center in BiH", on the occasion of the International Day of Action for Rivers, March 14, points out that this day is extremely important for all activists of Bosnia and Herzegovina who seek to protect BiH natural resources, especially the rivers, "from corruption, which contributes to the unreasonable destruction of rivers by the construction of small hydropower plants (SHPs)".
They point out that BiH has 244 rivers and the construction of more than 400 SHPPs that were planned to be built on them would mean that each and every river would be directed into the pipes if such thing would be allowed.
Also, they state that 114 SHPPs are currently being built throughout BiH, which in their full capacity contribute only up to three percent to the production of electricity annually (which we have a surplus in BiH, so it is exported to neighboring countries).
"SHPPs do not contribute to the creation of new jobs, except for investors who collect money through subsidies by taking money from all citizens who pay the electricity bill, because the operation of SHPPs is controlled exclusively through the online system; while our rivers dry up, dry riverbeds remain and citizens who depend on rivers for freshwater, agriculture and tourism are forced to move out of BiH, such as locals from the municipalities of Vitez, Kaćuna, Jablanica, Travnik, villages along the canyon of Ugar, Neretva, Drina, Fojnica, Željeznica, Lašva, Lepenica, and Bosna," warns the "Aarhus Center in BiH".
