MOSTAR, February 17 (FENA) - The "Infohouse" Foundation, "Budućnost" Association and "Marguerite" Safe House signed a memorandum of cooperation in Mostar today. On this occasion, the project "Economic and social opportunities towards the independence of women, victims of domestic violence" was presented to women victims of violence.

Director of the Association "Budućnost" from Modriča, Jelena Mišić, said that the goal of this project is to empower former and current users of all safe houses in BiH, more precisely eight of them.

“What is envisaged by the project is to undergo some trainings, to empower women, to give them the opportunity to learn some skills so that they can better develop their idea and business plan so that they can later apply for a public call for grants,” she said is Mišić.

She pointed out that this project envisages the award of 15 grants, and the value of each grant is 3,000 euros.

Mišić explained that as part of this project, they will analyze the law on protection from domestic violence in both entities and that they will work together with other organizations to improve these laws.

She added that women's financial independence is extremely important, as it is often the case that victims do not leave their abusers due to lack of money.

When asked if the competent institutions monitor this issue, Mišić answered that the institutions have several programs, but that this is not enough.

An additional problem is the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to an increase in domestic violence.

Director of the Association "Women of BiH" from Mostar, Dijana Tadić, pointed out that the mentioned project is extremely important because economic dependence is one of the biggest problems and the main reason why women remain in a violent community.

When it comes to data for Mostar, Tadić said the number of reports of domestic violence doubled during the pandemic.

Statistics show that every fifth woman in BiH has experienced some form of violence from her partner, and only 5.5 percent of them seek help from competent institutions.

The project Economic and Social Opportunities for the Independence of Women, Victims of Domestic Violence is being implemented by the Infohouse Foundation in partnership with the Budućnost Association and is financially supported by the European Union.
