Čović: Ensure that all votes are counted exclusively in Mostar

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, December 10 (FENA) - President of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) BiH and the Croatian National Parliament (HNS) Dragan Čović sent a letter to representatives of the international community in BiH in which he pointed out that the Central Election Commission (CEC) of BiH must put in the function of holding local elections in the City of Mostar.

“As you are aware, the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina has made a significant effort this year to hold local elections throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina at the same time. As a party, we have taken on certain obligations in this regard, but unfortunately, we are witnessing that these efforts have not borne fruit and the elections in Mostar are being held on a special date, in a special way, and in special circumstances. We are happy as a party, and especially as Mostar citizens, that the City of Mostar and the citizens of Mostar after 12 years have the opportunity to choose their own city government in accordance with modern and democratically developed practices. The beginning of next week, December 15, is the deadline for confirming the results of local elections in other local units, thus ending the period of intensive activities of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina on this issue and more intensive engagement in organizing local elections in Mostar to be held on December 20,” says Čović.

He expressed fears about possible irregularities in Mostar, which have already been seen in the local elections in BiH.

“With the aim of timely implementation of election results and creating conditions for the formation of the City Council, which the citizens of Mostar have been waiting for eight years, it is necessary to conduct quality training of polling station members so that everything runs smoothly, the counting process is transparent and timely and the election results really reflect the will of the voters,” it is written in Čović's letter.

He also pointed out the distrust of the citizens towards, as he states, the illegally appointed composition of the CEC.

“In this context, we reiterate the importance of engaging mobile correspondence teams, and we invite you to be engaged as much as possible on election day for the purpose of monitoring them. I am convinced that you will agree with me that we must not allow anything that can cast a shadow over the elections in Mostar. They must be an example of pure democratic rivalry and competition of political entities in a fair political game for the City Council and the position of Mayor of the City of Mostar. Every link and part of the election process must be impeccably checked and monitored. In this regard, I appeal to your full commitment and presence,” Čović concluded in a letter to Johann Sattler, Head of the EU Delegation to BiH, US Ambassador Eric Nelson, High Representative to BiH Valentin Inzko, and Ambassador of the OSCE Mission to BiH Kathleen Kavalec.
