SARAJEVO, December 10 (FENA) - The online panel discussion "The role of the media in preventing violence against women and girls" marked the end of this year's UN Women BiH campaign "Exclude violence against women and girls together."
In cooperation with partners, the UN Women Office in BiH conducted the campaign from November 25 to December 10 as part of the global campaign "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence", which calls for an end to all forms of violence against women and girls.
“Sweden, as a strategic partner of UN Women in BiH, continues to support work on the prevention of violence against women and girls, in which all members of society should participate. The media have an important role to play in this process,” said Torgny Svenungsson, Head of the Development Cooperation Department and Deputy Head of Mission at the Swedish Embassy in BiH.
The results of the campaign were summarized by David Saunders, UN Women Representative in BiH, who said this year's campaign highlighted the key role the media play in raising awareness of the increase in violence against women, which is a shadow pandemic due to the COVID-19 crisis.
“Professional reporting, work on overcoming stereotypes, strengthening women in the media and the capacity of the media to systematically report on domestic violence, is really important - it is a social good. UN Women continues to work with media involved in producing high-quality media reports in local communities,” Saunders said.
At the final event of the campaign, BiH media are invited to join the initiative of responsible and professional reporting on gender-based violence against women and girls, especially during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the social networks of UN Women in BiH - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, representatives of the non-governmental sector, media and the international community in BiH called for an urgent end to all forms of violence against women and girls in BiH with the motto #excludeviolence.
Sweden's activities in preventing violence against women are strategically supported by Sweden, according to a statement from UN Women BiH.
