Bujak: Bronze belt buckle with a lily excavated near Ilijaš

SARAJEVO, November 29 (FENA) - A part of a belt buckle made of bronze with gilding and depiction of lilies engraved on it, was excavated this year at one of the largest medieval archeological sites in BiH, the site of the town of "Dubrovnik" near Ilijaš.

"One such motif tells us about medieval trends, about the Bosnian ruling line, the motif of lilies, which is very important for the Bosnian Middle Ages. Such a finding is a great example of art and luxury, and the way of life of people in the medieval town of Dubrovnik," said in an interview with FENA Edin Bujak from the Institute of Archeology, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo.

It is a significant cultural and historical, national monument of BiH, which has been forgotten for many years. But professors and students from the Institute of Archeology, with the support of the Municipality of Ilijaš, started slowly to bring this medieval pearl back to life.

The town of Dubrovnik, explains Bujak, was first mentioned in historical sources in 1404, although based on archaeological results, and can be said that it existed even earlier. The town ceased to live when the area lost its strategic, political and cultural significance in the early 18th century and has since been forgotten.

Archaeological excavations are being carried out from 2017 to 2020, and students and professors of archeology first explored the eastern tower, which is octagonal and proved to be very interesting.

He expressed hope that excavations will continue in this medieval urban complex in the coming years as well because the city is extremely complex and consists of an upper and lower town. The upper town consists of the fort itself, and it is the central part of the complex, while in the lower town probably lived and worked craftsmen who lived in the old "Dubrovnik".

“We have a town that was a craft and trade part, it is really a medieval complex and certainly the largest in the area of today's Sarajevo Canton,” said Bujak.

But unfortunately, he added, it is still not well researched and protected, and the steps they are taking are moving towards bringing that medieval pearl back to life.

That archeological material, he said, speaks of luxury and everyday life, but also of military activities, weapons, that is, the remains of weapons that they found.

The town was probably ruled by members of the medieval noble family Batić / Mirković, and their members were buried in the nearby necropolis in Kopošići, which is about a kilometer away from the town. He reminded that the necropolis was excavated in 2015, and on that occasion, a shiny brocade cloak of the Grand Duke of Bosnia was found from the court of King Tvrtko I. Today, the cloak is kept in the National Museum of BiH and can be seen in the room with the Haggadah, where the most significant medieval finds of BiH are kept.

There are many findings that can be attributed to the Ottoman period. The finds of pottery from Izmit (Turkey) should certainly be singled out here, and it was the most luxurious ceramic goods used in the Ottoman Empire.

There is also an old Ottoman cemetery nearby, and those who guarded and worked on the fortress were buried there.
