MOSTAR, November 9 (FENA) - Throwing flowers into the Neretva River and a silent dive without applause on Monday marked the 27th anniversary of the demolition of the Old Bridge in Mostar.
The Mostar Diving Club, as it did in the years before, has marked the anniversary of the demolition of the Old Bridge with a symbolic dive into the river without applause from their member Kenan Jukla, at exactly 10.16 a.m., when the bridge was destroyed and it toppled down into the Neretva River in 1993.
"Today, we mark twenty-seven sad years since that gloomy day with a dive without applause. That is the least the Club can do. We are here to send a message that this must never happen again," said the spokesman of the Club, Saša Oručević.
He added that they were not even prevented by the coronavirus pandemic from marking the day.
The Mostar Old Bridge is the work of Turkish builder Hairudin, between 1557 and 1566.
At the beginning of the war, in 1992, the Old Bridge was damaged by the Serb military forces and the JNA, and on November 9, 1993, the Old Bridge was destroyed and it toppled into the river after it was hit by artillery fire shot from the military positions of the Croat Defense Council (HVO).
The renovation of the Old Bridge began in 2000, and in 2004, the reconstructed bridge was opened. The following year it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
