"Don't Vote, Choose!" campaign encourages young people in BiH to go to the polls

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 5 (FENA) - The International Republican Institute (IRI) has launched the "Don't Vote, Choose!" campaign which is directed towards young people in BiH.

The IRI Director Borislav Spasojević stated that for the fourth year in a row, they are organizing a regional program for young politicians, the Institute for Advanced Leadership in Politics (ALPI), which brings together young leaders from political parties and educates and empowers them on a number of important topics from the field of security and Euro-Atlantic integration.

"This time through the mobilization campaign "Don't Vote Choose!", which ironically warns young people what would happen if they do not go to the polls, we have created a synergy of young activists and representatives of different political parties, by gathering numerous young people who have participated in creating this campaign," said Spasojević.

He added that the participants in these programs, as well as young people from partner organizations that supported them, come from 20 cities in BiH, some study, some work, some are activists, some politicians, but all share the opinion that it is necessary in their cities for young people to go to the polls and vote.

In his latest message on LinkedIn, US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson also dedicated part of his address to young voters in BiH.

"The youth of this country do not want to remain immersed in the past. Collectively, citizens have the power to determine the future, to ensure that BiH takes its place as a stable and prosperous member of the Euro-Atlantic community. Bosnia and Herzegovina's success does not depend on what the international community can do. It will depend, in President Kennedy's word,  on what you can do for your country. Effective citizen oversight will eventually replace international oversight," Nelson said.

At a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is threatening to bring the turnout in local elections below 50 percent, it seems that young people may be the ones whose vote will count the most, the IRI said.
