Uebber expressed gratitude to German THW team for their work in Blažuj

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 23 (FENA) - German Ambassador to BiH Margret Uebber today received a team of German Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), technical and logistical assistance team, who have been working on measures to facilitate the reception center in Blažuj as part of a volunteer engagement.

“I am glad that these measures, facilitating the reception center, would be completed by end of this month and that Germany has clearly stated that it wants to relieve the institutions of BiH in accommodation of migrants. I am grateful to the THW activists who volunteered and spent part of their Christmas or New Year holidays here, to help ensure that refugees and migrants are properly accommodated in Blažuj. In doing so, they set an example of their civic and social engagement that cannot be appreciated enough,” said Ambassador Margret Uebber.

The Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk is a German state organization for civil protection and crisis management consisting of volunteers and permanent staff in the department of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community.

As of November 21, 2019, THW was deployed in Blažuj with 50 volunteers.

Germany has made a total of more than one million euros at disposal for the implementation of necessary measures in Blažuj. This includes the supply of water and electricity, the installing of sanitary units and heating, as well as repairs to individual buildings and roofs.

A press release from the German Embassy states that these works will be completed by the end of January and will be harmonized with the competent BiH institutions and IOM.

Security Minister of BiH Fahrudin Radončić said he was grateful to THW's team help in setting up the migrant reception center in Blažuj.

“BiH does not have the financial capacities, also we do not have enough human capacity to cope with this kind of global challenge that is migrant crisis. In this regard, we welcome any kind of assistance. We need systemic solutions, which also means cooperation with the European Union,” said Minister Radončić.
