FENA Kanita Aliagić

SARAJEVO, December 13 (FENA) - The Extended Coordination Team on Migration Issues of the Sarajevo Canton held a meeting today to discuss the situation at the Ušivak and Blažuj Migrant Centers, finding solutions that would lead to a better and more effective management of the migrant crisis and preventive action in order to prevent the crisis from escalating.

Representatives of the Government of the Sarajevo Canton, NGOs, IOM, DRC, Foreigners' Affairs Service, Ilidža Health Center, Public Entity Rad, Center for Social Work, Police Directorate of the Sarajevo Canton, Public Enterprise of Water and Sewerage, Emergency Services and civil protection set priorities in addressing the migrant crisis.

Priority is given to migrants who are housed in the reception centers of Ušivak and Blažuj, in the municipalities of Ilidža and Hadžići, who are to be provided with stable living conditions, health care, drinking water, and hygiene products, especially in Blažuj.

Also, Minister of Labor, Social Policy, Displaced Persons and Refugees of the Sarajevo Canton Malik Garibija said that there were already improvised dispensaries in the migrant centers, doctors were in the field, and currently, since there is no water, works are underway to provide it. Hot water boilers are being prepared. There are also lighting problems near the campsite.

"It will take us 20 days to equip the camp in Blažuj for migrants' needs. We will ask the IOM to establish additional transport lines for citizens as well as migrants in order to prevent additional pressures and problems for the local community. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the crisis does not escalate and the problem does not continue - Garibija said.

He added that members of the Sarajevo Canton Interior Ministry have adapted their operations and that there are more police officers providing security for migrants and Sarajevo Canton citizens, but stressed that the sole and exclusive competence is by the BiH Council of Ministers which is "inadequately managing the migrant crisis".
