SARAJEVO, August 23 (FENA) - As part of the 27th anniversary of the shelling and burning down of the National and University Library of BiH (NUBBiH), located in the City Hall, a performance took place today in Sarajevo to draw attention to hundreds of books burned down in a fire.
Welcoming the guests, Director of the National and University Library of BiH, Ismet Ovčina, recalled that in the night between August 25 and August 26, 1992, the City Hall building was shelled from the hills around Sarajevo. The City Hall housed the National and University Library of BiH from January 1951.
Almost the entire interior with about 90 percent of the library fund and historical documents were irretrievably destroyed, and Ovčina emphasized that no one was responsible for the destruction of this temple of culture, education and science.
The City Hall was rebuilt and re-opened on May 9, 2014, but NUB BiH, as the only legal occupant of the facility, is still in temporary, non-conditional location for books and staff.
