SARAJEVO, December 2 (FENA) – Over the period of eleven months of 2018, 133 posthumous remains were exhumed, who are assumed to belong to victims of previous war. Results are still not final and it is possible this number will be higher by the end of the year,” Lejla Čengić from the Missing Persons Institute of BiH said in an interview with FENA.

She stated the reason of a low number of exhumed posthumous remains compared to previous years is lack of accurate information on potential locations of individual and mass graves.

She reminded three mass graves have been found this year: mass grave at Rogoj, Trnovo municipality, from which five victims were exhumed; mass grave in Goražde, three victims, and mass grave Golubnjača pit in Drvar, from which 18 victims were exhumed.

Čengić noted that identities of exhumed victims from these graves still have not been determined.

During 2018, 123 victims exhumed in the previous period have been identified, but that number is also lower than in previous years.

So far 26 000 missing persons have been verified in the Central Records on Missing Persons (CEN) out of 34.964 registered missing persons.

Čengić emphasized that significant cooperation has been established with families and associations of missing persons in area of the entire BiH and that they have invested efforts to include families of missing persons in the search process to improve the overall transparency.

Website of the Missing Persons Institute has been launched to give information about the search process to the families.

“Even though a lot of work has been done in our country in regards of the missing persons, final solution is not even close. We are still searching for 7.228 missing persons in BiH,” concluded Čengić.
