JAHORINA, March 22 (FENA) - Some statistics show that currently there are about 2,000 children without parental care in Bosnia and Herzegovina, of which most of them live in the institutional environment, and smaller number, about 500 children, are in foster care.
These data were outlined by the head of UNICEF's program "Transformation of childcare institutions and prevention of separation of families," Sandra Kukić, during the first day of an interactive workshop called "Every child needs a family", which was held today at Jahorina, organized by UNICEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ms. Kukić stressed that every child's right was to live in a family and that one of the goals of this UNICEF program is to ensure this right, first and foremost the child's right to live in his or her family. In addition, she added, they want to help biological parents stay with their children.
"However, if there must be separation, then we want to allow these children to live in a family environment," she said.
One of the participants in today's workshop, Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of the Federation of BiH (FBiH) Miroslav Jurešić, announced that a new Law on Foster Care at the FBiH level introduces many novelties.
He also pointed to the fact that all previous analyses have shown that the institutional form of housing children is much more detrimental and worse than the services provided in the family environment.
