SARAJEVO, February 21 (FENA) - Director of the Institute of Language, Dr. Alen Kalajdžija, pointed out today on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, the importance of developing a positive awareness of the preservation of our own linguistic identity, stressing that the Bosnian language is not a ‘Bosniak language’ and that Bosnian language is a historical fact.

Kalajdžija emphasized that the basic function of language is to connect people, and it can only be misused for political purposes, but that we have to respond to everyday cases of denial of any linguistic identities for political reasons.

He said that citizens should cultivate the tolerance and the need to respect the elementary human rights, which is also the right to language.

“Language is the link between what the situation was with the society in the past wand what we have now. Language is the intellectual archeology of the people who use that language," said Kalajdžija.

The International Mother Language Day was marked in Sarajevo with a lecture titled "Developing Awareness about Language Identity", hosted by the Language Institute.
