SARAJEVO, July 25 (FENA) - In front of the building of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (OHR), a peaceful protest of citizens is still ongoing due to the announced decision on changes to the Election Law of BiH and the Constitution of the Federation of BiH, which was announced by the High Representative in BiH Christian Schmidt.
Carrying the flags of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the citizens sent out a message to HR Christian Schmidt, that they would not allow the division of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for which they died and bled. They are against discriminatory changes to the BiH Election Law.
The citizens emphasized that they want a united Bosnia and Herzegovina without ethnic divisions.
In the past week, the leaders of pro-Bosnian parties, the academic public, and individuals urged High Representative Christian Schmidt not to impose changes to the BiH Election Law.
Therefore, political officials in BiH joined the citizens at the protests, among them, Chairman of the Presidency of BiH Šefik Džaferović, Member of the Presidency of BiH Željko Komšić, the SDA President Bakir Izetbegović, the SDP President Nermin Nikšić, the SBB president Fahrudin Radončić, Our Party president Edin Forto, and the leader of the People and Justice Party Elmedin Konaković.
In a short address, the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Džaferović, thanked the citizens for their presence at the protest and said that BiH is sovereign, democratic and indivisible.
"Let the voice of Bosnia and Herzegovina be heard. I call on the High Representative not to intervene into the Constitution and the Election Law at this moment," said Džaferović and added that the solutions should not only benefit some but all citizens of BiH.
Leaders of Bosnian political parties are united and they all expressed their opposition to the amendments to the Election Law and the FBiH Constitution and called on Christian Schmidt not to use the Bonn powers, because the proposed solutions to amend the BiH Election Law are contrary to the concept advocated by BiH and the European Union.
There are announcements that High Representative Schmidt may give up on imposing his solutions, but tomorrow he should announce the final decision.
The President of the Jewish Community, Jakob Finci, reminded of international law that when elections are announced, there are no elements to change the existing election law.
Strong police forces are securing the area where the protest is taking place in Sarajevo.
