Indictment filed against Samardžija and Stanić for war crimes in the Bijeljina area

SARAJEVO, May 13 (FENA) - The prosecutor of the Special Department for War Crimes has filed an indictment against Milenko Samardžija, aka "Travka" and "Žabac" (1964) and Kosta Stanić, aka "Kole" (1970), who are charged for war crimes committed in the Bijeljina area.

The accused are charged that, as members of the RS MoI, Sokolac police station, together with several persons, they acted contrary to the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons and directly, knowingly and willingly participated in the killings of Bosniak civilians, including women, children and the elderly, who in no way participated in hostilities and military operations.

The indictment alleges that in September 1992, the accused participated in the forced removal of civilians from their homes, transport by military trucks and shooting on the banks of the Drina River, killing a total of 22 victims, from the Sarajlić, Sejmenović and Malagić families and then throwing their bodies into the Drina River.

The defendants are charged with personally and directly participating in the shooting and killing of the victims, the oldest of whom was a 72-year-old woman and the youngest a six-year-old boy.

As part of that crime, five victims under the age of 18 were killed.

The Accused Samardžija is also charged with participating in the illegal forcible removal of three Bosniak civilians from their homes and public places in the premises of the police station, where he tortured and abused the victims and then transported the victims to the bank of the Drina River in Balatun, where he personally killed three civilians by firing from close range.

The indictment was forwarded to the Court of BiH for confirmation, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH announced.
