SARAJEVO, June 8 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković said that the final verdict against Ratko Mladić is a historic one.
"The verdict against Ratko Mladić has immeasurable significance for the future of BiH and the entire region because only on truth and justice can we build lasting peace and stability," Turković pointed out.
Although the verdict did not cover all crimes and genocide in all municipalities where it was committed, for the first time in history, Turković emphasizes, that the genocide against Bosniaks was investigated, established and convicted by an international tribunal and that it will be recognized and remembered for the generations to come.
Ratko Mladić, she said, is just one of the main and recognizable faces of the perpetrators of the genocide and he received the punishment he deserved.
Turkovic expressed confidence that this would be an opportunity for the authorities of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the entity of RS political representatives who deny genocide to accept the truth, reject criminal ideology, symbols and politics, and turn to the European future. Confronting the truth and individualizing guilt for the worst crimes on European soil after World War II is in their best interest.
"Therefore, Serbia should be the main partner, not only of the Residual Mechanism for the completion of the process against those responsible for war crimes but also the advocate of prosecuting all suspects before the courts in the region," said Turković.
She added that the denial of genocide and the glorification of convicted war criminals, which we are still witnessing, are the main obstacles to lasting peace and lead to destabilization of the entire region and block progress towards the EU, which most people in BiH and Serbia want.
"That is why it is necessary to legally ban public denial of genocide and celebration of war crimes and criminals as soon as possible. It is an opportunity for the new High Representative to set the new standard on the basis of which reconciliation and a better future could be built," concluded Turković.
