Bosniak Initiative calls for Srebrenica to get a special constitutional status

FENA Press release

SREBRENICA, January 28 (FENA) - The call of Srebrenica Mayor Mladen Grujičić for the secession of the entity of Republika Srpska was a final straw and it is necessary to say enough is enough. This will surely open a new page in the political activities of Bosniaks in Srebrenica gathered around the "My Address: Srebrenica" Initiative.

"For years, Bosniaks in the RS and Srebrenica have suffered enormous injustice, discrimination and persecution from RS institutions, such as the ban on the Bosnian language, persecution by the police, disregard for international court rulings, wiretapping and interception of conversations, denial of genocide and argued that a call coming from Srebrenica, a town that was under UN protection and in which the crime of genocide was committed against Bosniaks, for the RS to go down the path of secession, gives us full right as well as our moral obligation to open a new page of our actions and ask the question: is there even a purpose to vote in the repeated election or participate in what seems only as a pretense democracy?” asked Sadik Ahmetović, president of the election headquarters of the Initiative.

Ahmetović also stressed recent examples of forming of the local governments without Bosniaks in Bratunac, Foča, Vlasenica and other places where Bosniaks were the majority people before the war and from which they were expelled and mass crimes committed against them. Today, they are not even allowed political participation to protect Bosniak returnees through the municipal institutions.

"Our struggle for Srebrenica has been continuous and constant, often with compromises in the hope that society in the RS will become democratized. Unfortunately, the situation of Bosniaks in the RS is getting worse day by day and we can say with certainty that we are threatened with the very biological survival in the territory of the entity. This is the last phase to politically eliminate Bosniaks in peacetime, which would ultimately result in the complete eradication of Bosniaks in the RS," warned Ahmetović.

The coalition called on “all domestic and international institutions in our country to initiate a dialogue and find a solution on the special status of Srebrenica within the BiH Constitution and amendments to the Srebrenica Election Law based on a pre-genocide census that would permanently define the position of Srebrenica in the Constitution to satisfy the minimum of justice necessary for better relations of all citizens of the municipality of Srebrenica and overall relations in our country,” Ahmetović said.
