Turković: Croatia should find an alternative site instead of Trgovska gora

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 21 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković warned today in Vienna that the proposed location for the nuclear waste disposal endangers one of the biggest national treasures of BiH - the Una River and 300,000 inhabitants in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In her introductory speech at the General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), she emphasized that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought the world into an unprecedented situation, but while fighting to resolve the situation, human rights must not be forgotten.

“That right to life is endangered today in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the proposed nuclear waste disposal site in Trgovska gora, in the neighboring Croatia, the lives of those living near the Una River, one of the few untouched rivers with crystal clear waters in whole of Europe,” she underlined.

As she pointed out, the proposed location in Trgovska Gora is less than a kilometer from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this potential location for nuclear waste disposal threatens with leakages into groundwater, which flows into the Una River, which the population of northern BiH relies on.

“The State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Bosnia and Herzegovina considers that the proposed site in Trgovska Gora poses a high risk in case of potential earthquakes, landslides and floods. Seismic areas like this do not meet international standards for the construction of such a nuclear waste facility,” said Minister Turković.

She also pointed out that the proposed site poses a direct threat to 300,000 inhabitants of those local communities, which rely on the Una River on a daily basis.

“Therefore, we are asking for the help of the European Union and the IAEA to help our neighbor find a safe and suitable place for their nuclear waste,” she added.

This place should not threaten our lives and should be a place that will not affect the Una River.

“Help us strengthen the right to life, the foundation of human rights, to which we sincerely adhere as a country that aspires to become a candidate for membership in the European Union,” said Minister Turković in her address.

During her official five-day visit to the Republic of Austria, Minister Turković will hold a series of meetings with top officials from United Nations (UN) agencies and the OSCE based in Vienna.
