Almir Dervišević's appeal for a fairer society and finding the missing

SARAJEVO, September 6 (FENA) - Conceptual artist Almir Dervišević is the author of another work on the topic of the missing, within the project "Justice for Bosnia and Herzegovina". By symbolically placing shoes on the fence in front of the building of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, on the International Day of the Disappeared, he appealed for a fairer society because it will contribute to finding the missing persons.

By presenting his work 'Missing', the author wants to point out the need for the International Court of Justice and society, in general, to act much more intensively and efficiently on the planetary realization of justice.

“The presence of evil ideologies in societies around the world is becoming more and more pronounced, and tolerance towards the action of these evil ideologies is becoming more and more noticeable. It is precisely such ideologies that have largely influenced the search for thousands of missing persons around the world today. I believe that by more resolutely opposing such ideologies that spread hatred, commit and glorify crimes, we can influence that the number of missing persons decreases.

“By individual and collective contribution towards a fairer society, we will also contribute to the discovery of missing persons, and influence the causes of their disappearance. Otherwise, the number of crimes and the number of missing persons will only grow, become our everyday life,” he emphasized.

As Dervišević warns, crimes against individuals and entire nations are being committed all over the world, and 'we are witnesses that a large part of humanity does not show the desire and readiness to oppose these crimes despite the possibilities they have'.

“By demonizing and dehumanizing, the rights of nations disappear, and ultimately entire nations disappear. We must know how to recognize and be resolute in condemning such ideologies because they bring only evil to all of humanity. As such, they influence the disappearance of values in our societies, which are the basis and condition of the true success of the individual and the community,” he believes.

The same author set up a similar installation in 2017, at the same location. The installation concerned millions of missing murdered Muslims around the world over the past two centuries. He said that few people know about their fate and few are interested 'because of the lack of empathy, and I guess as a consequence of the demonization and dehumanization of Muslims'.

In front of the United Nations building in Geneva, Dervišević presented his other work in 2003 symbolizing 8,000 missing persons, murdered Bosniaks in Srebrenica in 1995. In the same year, he presented an installation of 8,000 pants, symbolizing 8,000 missing people. This installation took place in front of the building of the Government of the Netherlands, on the day of the debate of that government regarding their responsibility.
