Čerkez: Citizens must grasp seriousness of the situation and obey the measures

SARAJEVO, June 12 (FENA) - A member of the Crisis Staff of the FBiH Ministry of Health Goran Čerkez announced that they would give consent upon a request of the cantons to declare an epidemic in the Sarajevo and Tuzla cantons and that an initiative to declare an epidemic in the Federation of BiH would also be launched.

In a statement to reporters, Čerkez asked the population to respect the measures that remain in force due to the coronavirus pandemic, the same as in the past 14 days, and appealed to the population to take it seriously.

He emphasized that the situation is under control, but also that it is evident that there has been a sharp and large increase in the number of cases in the Tuzla Canton, also in Sarajevo, Zenica and Una-Sana cantons.

He, therefore, called for greater engagement of inspections at all levels, in order to fully implement the measures.

“We have called on the cantonal crisis HQs to strengthen epidemic monitoring at the cantonal level. They have the possibility to adopt more restrictive measures at the cantonal level. It is important that the cantons regularly carry out an epidemiological assessment of the situation and adopt certain restrictive measures accordingly. These are all measures that can be adopted to protect the health of the population of the FBiH and the cantons,” said Čerkez.

A member of the Crisis Staff, microbiology specialist Mirsada Hukić believes that it is necessary to create such an environment so that people understand the situation and respect the measures.

At the moment, she believes, it would be most effective to sanction the individuals that do not comply with the measures in force.

“Our citizens seem to take it seriously only when sanctions are introduced. When you don’t wear a mask, you will pay a fine. You will then consider whether you will wear it next time or not. That is the only thing the citizens understand,” she emphasized.

Hukić says that this society must develop, but also that we must learn to live with the virus.

The introduction of restrictions would be devastating for the economy as well, so adherence to the measures is imperative for everyone, and for the health of all citizens.

Medical experts once again today appealed to the population to wear protective masks regularly, avoid direct contact and keep a physical distance of at least 1.5 meters. Emphasis has also been placed on regular hand washing, room ventilation and avoiding group gatherings.
