SARAJEVO, May 15 (FENA) - German Ambassador to BiH Margret Uebber expressed solidarity in a video message on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), and stressed that BiH has made significant progress in protecting the rights of LGBTI population.
"To me personally, it was a really exciting experience when last year, shortly after my arrival in Sarajevo, I participated in the first Pride March. The peaceful atmosphere and character of the event and a large number of visitors were a success, not only for the organizers but also for the rights of LGBTI people in BiH," she said.
That event showed us that political will is needed in order to achieve progress in terms of providing equality.
"Unfortunately, we continuously witness, again and again, that LGBTI persons are still exposed to injustice, discrimination, sometimes even physical attacks. We must, therefore, continue to stand up for the rights of LGBTI people, the rights that will not only be guaranteed on paper, but also in the daily lives of the population.
The first step in this direction could be, for example, the adoption of a comprehensive action plan for the rights of LGBTI people. Respect for and protection of human rights are the foundations of the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
As the German ambassador here in BiH, I will continue to advocate for the protection of the rights of LGBTI population, be against discrimination and closely monitor the development of this situation," said the ambassador in a video message, announced the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated on May 17, and this year's motto is 'Breaking the Silence'.
