SARAJEVO, September 29 (FENA) - The 12th 'Race for the Cure', held this Sunday in Sarajevo, gathered more than 9,000 participants from 70 towns and communities throughout the country as part of an international initiative aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and the need for regular checkups.
The organizer of the event was “Think pink - Together we are One”. All the money gathered from the event will be spent on free mammography tests in rural areas and post-operative first-aid packages for women.
The race is organized in 150 cities around the world and about a million people take part each year.
The regional director of “Think Pink - Together we are One”, Nela Hasić, told FENA that about 100 buses arrived in Sarajevo from Krajina, Brčko, from the regions of Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and the entire Federation pf BiH, with a record number of participants.
“All of Bosnia and Herzegovina is here today and the participants are now part of Europe because this is simultaneously happening in 15 European cities,” she said.
"For those who have survived breast cancer, this day is more than just a gathering - it is a celebration of life," said Hasić.
The funds raised at this event will be fully returned to the community through free mammograms and post-operative, first-aid packages. Last year, 1,300 women got a free mammogram, and by the end of the year, 1,400 packages for those women who went through surgery will be delivered.
This year's 'Race for the Cure' was joined by representatives of the diplomatic corps and individuals from BiH's public life.
There is no accurate statistics in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the number of women suffering from breast cancer, but this disease causes a large number of women to lose the battle for their lives.
