SARAJEVO, December 11 (FENA) - Three former Bosnian Army soldiers convicted of crimes against Croat civilian detainees in the Mostar area in 1993 had their sentences increased on appeal.
The appeals chamber of the Bosnian state court on Tuesday increased ex-soldier Enes Ćurić’s sentence to eight years in prison, Ibrahim Demirović’s sentence to 13 years and Habib Čopelj’s to five years.
Two other former Bosnian Army soldiers, Samir Kreso and Mehmed Kaminić, were acquitted.
Ćurić and Demirović were convicted of participating in the unlawful detention and inhumane treatment of Croat civilians in Bijelo Polje, near Mostar, and forcing them to do hard labor.
Čopelj was convicted of the inhumane treatment of detainees, while Demirović was also convicted of raping a woman.
Under the first-instance verdict, Ćurić had been sentenced to five years in prison, Demirović to ten years and Čopelj to two years.
Tuesday’s sentence cannot be appealed, BIRN reports.
